Atlanta, GA 30316

Monthly meetings are held at the community center at 177 Estoria Street, on the second Tuesday of the month at 7PM. All are welcome to attend.

Cabbagetown is a historic neighborhood located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Cabbagetown developed around the Fulton Cotton and Bag Mill and has a strong Appalachian heritage. During the 80's and 90's Cabbagetown became home to many artists and musicians. During the 90's Cabbagetown, along with the rest of in-town Atlanta, experienced a re-newed interest in in-town living and restoration of the older homes. Today Cabbagetown is home to a wonderful mix of families, singles, young couples, artists, corporate executives, independent businesses, and several churches - all within a six block area.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A trail of uprooted and broken trees, downed utility lines, peeled-off roofs and collapsed brick walls marked the path of a tornado that tore through downtown Atlanta. The National Weather Service confirmed late Saturday morning that an EF-2 tornado with winds up to 130 mph struck the city Friday night. Trees blown down in Friday night's storm crushed a row of houses in the city's historic Cabbagetown district just east of downtown. Cabbagetown was among the hardest-hit communities. When daylight broke Saturday, residents woke up, looked around at the damage and were in shock. Initial estimates from the mayor's office said at least 20 of the historic homes were damaged or destroyed by the tornado. Atlanta police Maj. Renee Propes urged people to stay away from Cabbagetown. "We appreciate the fact that people may want to help," Propes said. "But, in most instances, they are hindering our efforts and possibly putting people and property at risk." The top floor collapsed at one building in the Fulton Cotton Mill Lofts, a 104-year-old industrial complex redeveloped into residences. Police officials said everyone was out of the structure and surrounding buildings and all residents in the lofts had been accounted for. As of 11 a.m. Saturday, about 10,000 customers were without power, but restoring it in some areas will be "very slow going," said Georgia Power spokesman John Sell.

WHY WORRY ABOUT COVERING UP THE TAG'S  . OH YEA I FORGOT YOU MIGHT BE THE TAGGER OR THERE FRIEND . LET ME ASK IF THE WALL OR THE TUNNEL IS FREE SPACE TO LEAVE A UGLY TAG THEN WHY CANT I PAINT OVER THEM ALL WITH BUTTER BEAN GREEN ? IT'S MY WAY TO EXPRESS MY THOUGHT'S TO THIS MATTER . I KNOW FOR A FACT INMAN PARK DON'T LIKE THE CRAP IN THE TUNNEL SO THERE FOR MAYBE WITH THERE PULL ON THIS MATTER BEING THAT THEY HAVE THE MONIES THEY CAN SUE CABBAGETOWN OVER THE TUNNEL AND HALF OWNERSHIP OF IT . JUST A THOUGHT NOW , FACT'S ARE FACT'S WHAT TRASH IS THERE WILL OVER FLOW ON BOTH SIDES . IT'S A FACT THAT CABBAGETOWN NEVER ASK INMAN PARK ABOUT WHAT THEY THINK OF IT . I'VE TALKED TO MANY PEOPLE ABOUT THIS MATTER ON BOTH SIDES OF THE WALL . WHO OTHER PEOPLE IN CABBAGETOWN HAS DONE THIS NO ? DON'T GET ME WRONG I DO LOVE MY NEIGHBOR'S AND MY NEIGHBORHOOD . I WILL IN TIME HAVE THE CRAP IN THE TUNNEL PAINTED OVER . WHAT COLORS DO YOU LIKE PINK ? I THINK A RAINBOW OF COLORS WOULD BE NICE MY SELF . CABBAGETOWN DON'T OWN IT INMAN PARK DON'T OWN IT CSX DON'T OWN IT NOR THE CITY OF ATLANTA OWNS IT . IT HAS NO OWNERSHIP THOUGH YOU THINK I KNOW SOMEONE OWNS IT OR IT WOULDN'T BE THERE .

HOW MANY PEOPLE IN CABBAGETOWN KNOWS ABOUT AN UPDATE FOR THE CABBAGETOWN NEIGHBORHOOD -OFFICER WOLFE ARRESTED LOUIS KYLE HEARD AT 860 FULTON TERRACE IN FRONT OF A TAGGER GIRL'S HOUSE ( I KNOW FOR A FACT SHE IS A TAGGER ) OFFICER WOLFE CAUGHT HIM SPRAYING ORANGE PAINT AT THAT LOCATION . HE WAS CHARGED WITH '' DEFACING BUILDINGS '' AND HAS A COURT DATE ON THE 8TH OF DEC. MAYBE OUR COURT WATCH FOLKS CAN KEEP TABS ON HIS CASE . THIS WAS SENT FROM  LT.BOYCE  ON TUESDAY ,OCTOBER 14,2008 AT 11:55 AM  IN RE: CABBAGETOWN CRIME REPORT .

NOTHING WAS EVER SAID ABOUT THIS MATTER IN THE CABBAGETOWN NEWS LETTER .

(  LT.BOYCE )  BETTER KNOWN AS TRUDY BOYCE  SENT THIS EMAIL ON THURSDAY ,  SEPTEMBER THE 25,2008  AT 12:48 PM  IN  RE: CABBAGETOWN CRIME REPORT

SHE ALSO SAID THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT

I BELIEVE THAT ANY INITIATIVE TO CLEAN AND BEAUTIFY AN AREA CONTRIBUTES TO THE SAFETY AND SECURITY OF CITIZENS .ERADICATION OF GRAFFITI  SENDS  A MASSAGE THAT THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS NOT TOLERANT OF OTHER VIOLATIONS AS WELL . ADDITIONALLY , A COMMUNITY THAT COMES TOGETHER AROUND ONE TYPE OF CRIME IS MUCH BETTER ORGANIZED TO COMBAT OTHER CRIMES .

FUNNY THING IS WHAT YOU ALL DON'T KNOW IF WE WORKED WITH THE COMMUNITIES OUT SIDE OUR NEIGHBORHOOD  LIKE INMAN PARK AND R-TOWN MORE CAN BE DONE ABOUT SOME OF THE CRIMES AND THE TAGGER'S . BUT THEN AGAIN WHEN A ZONE 2 COP'S SON HAS DONE SOME OF THE TAGGING'S HERE IN CABBAGETOWN AND THEY GET CAUGHT BY ONE OF US WE GO TO JAIL AND HIS SON GET'S A PAT ON THE HEAD AND A BOWL OF ICE CREAM .

I am so disappointed in the way Cabbagetown is handling public art. Why is it ok to cover up other people's expression with green paint, yet put up your own hand painted add for Chomp and Stomp? Why is the community ok with one man attempting to attack another over graffiti? You guys aren't ok with graffiti in your neighborhood anymore, but you are ok  having a graffiti advertisement for your Halloween event on the metal walls in Renyoldstown. Also, why is the green paint starting to make its way to the other side of Krog tunnel on Dekalb? Is Cabbagetown hoping to rid the other neighborhoods of public art and expression as well?

When I moved here, I finally felt like I had found an open minded, artistic, eclectic, creative and expressive community. Now, I am feeling ashamed to live in an area that supports this green paint "censorship". I don't understand why people would move to this neighborhood if they didn't support the artistic freedom that was expressed here. What was once a constantly changing, interesting and expressive area is now plain and like any other neighborhood in Atlanta.

The graffiti in Cabbage town is beautiful. Who are you to define what art is? Who are you to determine what vandalism is? You pour concrete, cut down trees, up root wild life to live in your fancy houses. Isn't that vandalism? Get over yourselves and open your mind...

   Hi folks:

I felt compelled to comment on this wall tagging crap. I think there are more productive ways to impress your tagging buddie's with your gang / anti govt & big business message tags or whtever u want to call the crap & u add to the governments waste of tax payers $ when u paint the street signs also. Don't get me wrong I believe there are plenty good places around this city for the beautiful murals.Furthermore CSX is a vibrant/prosperous company that is & will continue to rake in the millions I have seen the ceo speak of this on tv, while millions of people are having a hard time in this f'd economy.I think the city should fine & tax CSX a new a$$hole until they keep a maintenance crew hired that would keep both the wall & the opposite side fence clean & painted regulary, plus a walking security patrol . This may sound like it's out of left field to u & then again maybe it's food for thought, but I have been living cabbagetown for 26 yr's or so & I know a handful
of young people from around here that have commited suicide for reasons beyond me. You might say what does that have to do with anything, well you would think a multi billion dollar  corporaration would have  gave something back by investing in the community so that the young people would have had more oppertunities
other than these trouble infested streets while becoming grown ups.

Hi folks:

O.K., so I'm way behind on this one, apparently it took driving by it 200 times for this to crystallize in my lizard brain.   Regarding the freight depot wall on Wylie Street, does anyone understand the rationalization behind painting half the wall badly?   I assume that the intention is to eliminate/ discourage graffiti.  Do you think a half-painted, avocado wall is more attractive?

And frankly, who owns this wall?  Is it city property?  Did you get permission to paint half of it badly?  There is a series of ceramic murals on this wall--is anyone considering this in their aesthetic treatment.  I realize that there are implications about grafitti, free expression, etc.--I'm not even going there.  I'm just trying to understand why someone thinks this is an attractive alternative.

John of Inman Park

I just want to say (as somone who commutes through Cabbagetown every day) that I commend those heroic individuals in Cabbagetown who vigorously cover up the vandalism that we used to see. These green painting individuals are my heroes! They are the best. I am stumped -- stumped! confused! disheartened! -- that there are individuals (homeowners!) in Cabbagetown who are actually criticizing these heroes! Unbelievable! Taggers are miscreants. They do not offer the world "art." The promote activities that lead the crime and mayhem in our city. (It does not matter how "lovely" this "art" looks by the way. Their activities constitute law-breaking, no matter how you look at it. So.. from this Inman Parker I saw "Hooray for Vigilence!" Hooray for Standing Up for What's Right!" I'll even say "Hooray for Green in Cabbagetown!" That's the color of "in-town" progress! Sincerely, JS
